It's important to remember that as dancers, we are musicians. Our bodies are our instruments and we play with the band just as much as the other band members do. So for us too, rhythm is everything.

Imagine, if you will, a guitarist who knows every note to Stairway To Heaven, but can't hold a rhythm, or a cellist who memorized the charts to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony but has no internal metronome. How good would those songs sound? What would become of their bands or orchestras if they were frequently out of rhythm? The exact same goes for dancers. We respect the band playing the music, our partners, and ourselves, by staying on the rhythm they're providing us. More importantly, just as it wouldn't sound right to have a musician out of rhythm, it doesn't feel or look right to dance that way.

In this workshop, we'll look at the construct of salsa rhythm as it pertains to dancers. We'll learn how to find the "1" and how to tell the very important difference between it and the "5". From there, a series of specifically crafted exercises will help to illustrate the theory we'll learn. Aside from purely dancing to the beat, having a stronger sense of rhythm will enable you to focus more on other elements of learning in classes, speeding up your overall development. On the dance floor outside of classes, you'll be a vastly more desirable partner (lead or follow) if you're on rhythm.

This two-hour (two-and-a-half hour tops) workshop will be jammed-packed with a colourful combination of classroom theory and practical dance application, bringing you one giant step closer to rhythmic bliss.
